Imagine that a man has just been pulled over for speeding in a deaf and
blind children’s school zone. The speed limit was 15 mph and he was caught driving 55 mph. The police officer gives him a ticket and requires him to appear in court. The day comes for his court appearance and the judge asks him to give testimony to why he was speeding. He tells the judge that he did not know that the speed limit in that area was 15 mph. The police officer then points out to the judge that there are ten clearly-posted signs that the speed limit is 15 mph. The man says that he did not see them. Do you think the judge should find this man innocent or guilty? Obviously a good and just judge would find this man guilty of the crime which he had committed and give the man a deserving punishment.
Now imagine a man standing before God on Judgment Day. It is shown to God that this man has broken God’s Law. He has lied, he has stolen, he has committed adultery, he has murdered, he has failed to put God first in his life at all times, he has used God’s name in vain, and he has coveted after things. Do you think God will find this man innocent and allow him into Heaven or guilty and give him the punishment he deserves? Obviously, if God is good and just, He will give this man the punishment he deserves. Now imagine you are standing before God on Judgment Day and God asks you if you are good enough to enter into Heaven.
Obviously you would want to know how good is good enough. According to God’s Word, good enough is perfect obedience to God’s Law, the Ten Commandments. God has told us that if we kept all of His Law, except for one of them, then we would still be guilty of
breaking His Law (James 2:10). Have you kept all of God’s Law? Have you ever lied? Have you ever stolen anything? Have you ever hated anybody (God considers hatred the seed from which murder grows, Matthew 5:21-22)? Have you ever looked on someone with lust (God considers lusting the seed from which adultery grows, Matthew 5:27-28)? Have you ever said “O my God” in an irreverent way? Have you always put God first in your life? If you are honest with yourself, you can likely say that you have broken all of God’s commandments. Do you think God will find you innocent or guilty on Judgment Day?
If you are guilty, and if God is good and just, He will give you the punishment you deserve. So what is the payment that man deserves for breaking God’s Law? The Bible calls the breaking of God’s Law sin (1 John 3:4) and tells us the payment for sin is death and Hell (Romans 6:23). Your payment for breaking God’s Law then is to die and spend eternity in Hell. Does this concern you? Do you want to know how to avoid this awful punishment that is to come upon you for breaking God’s Law? God gives the solution to this problem in His Word.
The solution that God gives to our problem is Jesus Christ. Imagine you are back in the court room and found guilty for your crime; the judge is about to pass sentence when someone you don’t even know rushes in and pays your fine for you! The court accepts the money and declares that you are free to go.That is exactly what God did for you on the cross 2000 years ago. Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while
we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”Jesus loved you so much that he paid the penalty for your sin, so you wouldn’t have to!In order to accect the payment for our fine, we must: Repent, Believe and Receive. Repent means to turn away from your sin and ask God to forgive you for breaking His law.Jesus said in Luke 13:3: “Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”Believe in Jesus, like you would trust a parachute if you were jumping out of an airplane. You wouldn’t just believe in the parachute, you would put it on (trust it) and jump (act on it). That is how we must put our faith and trust in Jesus as our only hope of heaven.Acts 4:12, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”Receiving Jesus means to turn your life over to him.II Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”Today with all your heart, turn away from your sin, and surrender your life to Jesus Christ. Please don’t put it off. You may die today and then it will be too late. Put your faith and trust in Him today.
